Plan Your Dive

What to Expect Each Season

The Great Barrier Reef at night changes dramatically with the seasons. Choose your dive date to match what excites you most.

Summer

December – February

27–29°C10–20 m vis
  • Coral mass-spawning event (Nov/Dec full moon)
  • Abundant nudibranchs — peak breeding season
  • Juvenile reef fish swarms around new corals
  • Soft corals fully extended for night feeding

Warmest water of the year. Coral spawning makes November and December the most biologically spectacular dives on the calendar.

Autumn

March – May

25–27°C15–22 m vis
  • Flatworms, ghost pipefish & cephalopods active
  • Outstanding macro life on reef walls
  • Octopus and cuttlefish hunting at full moon
  • Comfortable dive temperatures as summer fades

Transitional season with excellent macro photography conditions. Cephalopods and flatworms are most active in autumn night dives.

Winter

June – August

23–24°C20–30 m vis
  • Manta rays at Taylor Reef cleaning stations
  • Humpback whales surface above (Jul–Sep)
  • Best visibility of the year — up to 30 m
  • Reef sharks most active after dark

Peak dive season. Crystal-clear visibility, manta rays overhead, and humpback whale songs audible underwater. Bring a 3mm or 5mm wetsuit.

Spring

September – November

24–27°C18–25 m vis
  • 3 consecutive Supermoons in 2025 (Sep, Oct, Nov)
  • Bioluminescence intensifies before spawning
  • Reef fish spawning aggregations begin
  • Coral polyps extended — reef feels alive

Building energy on the reef. In 2025, three consecutive supermoons make Sep–Nov the most visually dramatic full moon dives of the year.
