Coral Spawning Event

Coral Spawning

Witness one of nature's greatest spectacles — November & December

The Great Barrier Reef's Greatest Show

Once a year, under very specific conditions, the Great Barrier Reef comes alive in a synchronised explosion of life — Coral Spawning.

This extraordinary natural event occurs over just a few nights each year, typically in November or December, following the full moon. Triggered by water temperature, lunar cycles and daylight hours, millions of coral polyps simultaneously release their eggs and sperm into the water column — creating an underwater snowstorm in reverse.

It's one of the most significant reproductive events on the planet, and witnessing it in person is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The water fills with tiny pink, orange and white bundles drifting toward the surface, while the reef itself seems to glow with life.

Our Coral Spawning Night Dives are carefully timed and planned to give you the best chance of experiencing this phenomenon firsthand — guided by marine biologists who understand the reef's rhythms.

When It Happens

Coral spawning typically occurs 4-6 days after the full moon in November or December, when water temperatures reach 26-27°C. The exact timing varies each year and is closely monitored by our team.

Duration & Timing

The spawning event usually begins around sunset and can last for several hours. Different coral species spawn at different times throughout the night, creating waves of activity across the reef.
