Planning Your Reef Visit

Everything you need to know before you arrive in Mission Beach.

Mission Beach Dive operates from Clump Point Marina in Mission Beach, Tropical North Queensland — one of the closest mainland departure points to the Outer Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Our reef sites at Beaver Reef and Taylor Reef are approximately 60–90 minutes by boat, meaning more time on the reef and less time in transit compared to operators departing from Cairns. Clump Point Marina is located on the northern end of Mission Beach Road and is well signposted from the township. Free parking is available at the marina.

Reef trips depart early in the morning from Clump Point Marina — well before the dive shop opens. The exact departure time is confirmed at booking and varies depending on the trip type and tidal conditions. A typical full day reef trip returns to the marina by mid-afternoon, usually between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm. If you are staying overnight in Mission Beach, we recommend Hideaway Holiday Village (58–60 Porter Promenade) — the closest accommodation to Clump Point Jetty, with the beach directly across the road and the village on your doorstep. View accommodation details → If you are driving up from Cairns or Townsville for a same-day trip, we strongly advise arriving the night before rather than attempting a pre-dawn drive on the day.

For PADI certification courses, training typically takes place over three to four days and includes confined water skill sessions at a local pool or sheltered location, followed by open water dives on the Great Barrier Reef. Students are encouraged to complete the online PADI eLearning theory component before arriving in Mission Beach — this is sent to you after booking and can be completed at your own pace on any device. Arriving with the eLearning completed means more in-water time during your course days.

What to bring on the day of your trip: all diving and snorkelling equipment is provided, so you do not need to bring any gear. Wear or pack your swimsuit, bring a towel, a hat, a warm layer for the boat ride home, and plenty of reef-safe mineral sunscreen (we stock it in our dive shop if you need to pick some up before heading to the marina, and we also carry it on board for guests who haven't brought their own). Leave regular chemical sunscreen at your accommodation — oxybenzone and octinoxate are banned on our trips to protect the reef ecosystem. If you have prescription lenses, let us know when booking so we can arrange corrective lenses in your mask.

We recommend booking at least 48 hours in advance to secure your preferred trip date, particularly during peak season between June and September when whale watching combines with reef diving and demand is high. For last-minute availability, calling or messaging us on WhatsApp will get the fastest response. We are a small, locally operated team and when you reach us, you are speaking directly with the crew who will be on the water with you — not a booking agency or call centre.

Mission Beach township is approximately 140 kilometres south of Cairns — roughly a 1.5 to 2 hour drive south along the Bruce Highway via Babinda and Innisfail, then 14 kilometres off the highway at El Arish onto Mission Beach Road. The nearest airport is Cairns (CNS), served by direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland. Car hire is available at Cairns Airport from all major rental companies. Greyhound and Premier Motor Service operate daily coach services between Cairns and Mission Beach for those who prefer not to drive.
