Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about diving, snorkelling, PADI courses, and reef experiences with Mission Beach Dive. Can't find what you're looking for? We're here to help.

This page covers the most common questions we receive from guests planning a Great Barrier Reef diving or snorkelling trip from Mission Beach. Topics include trip logistics and what to bring, health and safety requirements for scuba diving, details on our PADI courses from beginner to advanced level, information about our special experiences including full moon night dives, seasonal whale watching tours (July to September), and coral spawning reef trips (November to December), as well as pricing, booking and cancellation policy.

If you are new to diving, the General and Learn to Dive tabs answer the most important questions about experience requirements, minimum age, and the difference between a Discover Scuba Dive and a full PADI Open Water certification. If you are already certified, the Reef Trips tab covers what to expect on a typical day, which reef sites we visit, what is included in the price, and our environmental policies — including why we require reef-safe sunscreen and the science behind oxybenzone and octinoxate bans in Hawaii, Palau and the Florida Keys.

If you have a medical condition, are travelling with a guest who has a disability, or have a question that is not answered below, please contact us directly. Our team at Mission Beach Dive is small and locally operated — when you call or message us, you speak directly to the people who will be on the boat with you, not a call centre. We are happy to talk through any concern before you book.

Accessibility & Disability Access

We are committed to making the Great Barrier Reef accessible to everyone. We welcome guests with disabilities and mobility considerations, and our crew are experienced in providing personalised support on board. If you have specific accessibility needs — including mobility aids, hearing or vision impairments, or any other requirements — please reach out before booking so we can ensure the best possible experience for you.

Absolutely! You don't need any experience or certification to enjoy the Great Barrier Reef with us. We have three perfect options depending on what suits you:

  • Snorkelling — The perfect way to experience the reef without scuba certification. Explore colourful coral gardens, reef fish, turtles and vibrant marine life in shallow, accessible areas with professional guides and flotation support available.
  • Discover Scuba Diving — No experience required! Explore the reef under direct supervision from a qualified PADI Instructor. Includes professional induction, onboard skills briefing, equipment familiarisation, and one guided reef dive (maximum depth: 12m). Just confidence in the water required.
  • PADI Open Water Course — Want to become a certified diver? This course takes you from zero experience to a globally recognised certification, with a mix of theory, confined water sessions and open water dives.

We provide all diving and snorkelling equipment. Just bring your swimsuit, towel, reef‑safe sunscreen, a hat, and a sense of adventure! If you have prescription lenses, let us know in advance and we can arrange suitable masks. If you have your own gear, you're welcome to bring it.
For snorkelling, there is no minimum age — it's suitable for the whole family. For Discover Scuba Diving, participants must be at least 10 years old. For PADI Open Water certification, the minimum age is 10 for Junior Open Water and 15 for the full Open Water certification. All minors require parental or guardian consent.
We offer free cancellation up to 48 hours before your scheduled trip. Cancellations within 48 hours may incur a fee. Weather‑related cancellations are always fully refundable — safety comes first.
A typical reef day trip runs approximately 6‑8 hours including travel time, briefings, and time on the reef. You'll generally get two reef site visits with time for snorkelling and/or diving at each. We depart in the morning and return in the afternoon.

Booking is easy! Call us on +61 455 957 263, send us a WhatsApp, or email info@missionbeachdive.com.

We recommend booking in advance, especially during peak season (June–September), to secure your preferred date and time.
