Outer Great Barrier Reef · Marine Park Green Zone
Nutrient-rich upwellings, spectacular coral walls and pelagic action — a favourite among experienced divers exploring the outer reef from Mission Beach.
About This Reef Site
Eddy Reef takes its name from the eddy currents that sweep around this section of the outer Great Barrier Reef, drawing nutrient-rich water up from deeper ocean layers. The result is a remarkably productive marine environment — well-fed coral, dense fish populations, and a higher than average frequency of pelagic species encounters.
The reef structure features dramatic sloping walls and terraced drop-offs beginning at around 10 m and descending to 25 m, covered in a mix of hard corals, large sea fans, soft corals and sponge gardens. Overhangs and swim-throughs along the wall add variety to the dive profile and provide excellent shelter for large reef residents.
Eddy Reef sits within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Green Zone and is located approximately 90 minutes by boat from Mission Beach. Open Water certified divers are welcome — the site is best suited to those comfortable with mild currents and mid-range depths.

What Lives Here
The eddy currents that define this site bring upwellings of nutrient-rich water, supporting exceptional biodiversity and more frequent pelagic encounters than most inner-reef sites.

Resident humphead napoleon wrasse are a signature sighting at Eddy Reef. These large, inquisitive fish often approach divers closely and are among the most impressive residents on the outer reef.
Large schools of chevron barracuda and great barracuda circle the upper sections of the reef wall in tight, spiralling formations — one of the most dramatic schooling fish displays in the region.
Spotted eagle rays glide along the reef slope at Eddy Reef, particularly in the 15–22 m range. Their elegant wingspan and spotted patterning make them among the most graceful encounters on the dive.
Whitetip reef sharks patrol the deeper sections of the wall and rest on sandy terraces. The nutrient-rich waters at Eddy Reef support healthy shark populations that are frequently sighted on every dive.
Schools of giant trevally (GT) and gold-spotted trevally are a regular feature at Eddy Reef, often hunting in coordination along the reef edge — a thrilling, fast-moving spectacle.
Green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles are frequently encountered cruising the reef slope or resting on ledges. The productive waters of Eddy Reef make it a favoured feeding ground.
