Snorkelling is the perfect way to experience the reef without scuba certification.
Snorkellers can expect colourful coral gardens, reef fish, turtles and vibrant marine life in shallow, accessible areas. This experience is suitable for families and non-divers seeking an unforgettable reef encounter.

While Cairns and Port Douglas send dozens of vessels to the same reef moorings daily, Mission Beach operates with small groups to quieter, less‑trafficked outer reef systems — meaning more reef to yourself and a more personal experience.

We depart directly to pristine outer reef sites — Beaver Reef, Taylor Reef, Eddy Reef and Ellison Reef — without the long transit times common from larger ports. More time on the reef, less time on the boat.

We had the pleasure of experiencing a fantastic day snorkelling. The reef was teaming with fish. The kids aged 10 & 8 loved the whole experience. The crew were amazing sharing knowledge of the boat, the islands, the reef, and the local area. Highly recommended for families!

Fantastic day of diving on the Great Barrier Reef. The boat trip was incredibly comfortable, and the staff were very professional and attentive. It was a small group with an Italian guide who spoke perfect Spanish. The marine life was everything I expected—spectacular!

Great trip with mix of snorkeling and DSD with mission beach dive. The snorkeling and diving was great - the reefs were amazing, along with many fish, a turtle and an octopus. This is a small personal trip that is miles away from the vast boats leaving Cairns every day.

Everything you need to know about diving, snorkelling and reef experiences with Mission Beach Dive.
Absolutely! You don’t need any experience or certification to enjoy the Great Barrier Reef with us. We have three perfect options depending on what suits you:
- Guided Snorkelling — Explore shallow coral gardens from the surface with flotation support and a professional Snorkel Guide. No experience needed, suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
- Discover Scuba Diving — Your first breath underwater! No certification required. Our Instructor teaches you the basics in a controlled environment, then guides you on a real reef dive. It’s the most popular choice for first‑timers.
- PADI Open Water Course — Want to become a certified diver? This course takes you from zero experience to a globally recognised certification, with a mix of theory, pool‑like sessions and open water dives.

We provide all diving and snorkelling equipment. Just bring your swimsuit, towel, reef‑safe sunscreen, a hat, and a sense of adventure! If you have prescription lenses, let us know in advance and we can arrange suitable masks. If you have your own gear, you’re welcome to bring it.
For snorkelling, there is no minimum age — it’s suitable for the whole family. For Discover Scuba Diving, participants must be at least 10 years old. For PADI Open Water certification, the minimum age is 10 for Junior Open Water and 15 for the full Open Water certification. All minors require parental or guardian consent.
We offer free cancellation up to 48 hours before your scheduled trip. Cancellations within 48 hours may incur a fee. Weather‑related cancellations are always fully refundable — safety comes first.
A typical reef day trip runs approximately 6‑8 hours including travel time, briefings, and time on the reef. You’ll generally get two reef site visits with time for snorkelling and/or diving at each. We depart in the morning and return in the afternoon.
